Careers in Phlebotomy
Phlebotomists play a vital role in healthcare by drawing blood for testing, transfusions, research, and donation. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and physicians’ offices.
A career as a phlebotomist offers strong earning potential, with a median annual wage of $43,660 (or $21/hour) as of May 2024 (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
After completing our Enhanced Phlebotomy Technician program, you’ll be qualified for entry-level phlebotomy and medical lab careers, including:

What You'll Learn
- Study infection control, safety, first aid, and universal precautions.
- Identify blood collection equipment, additives, and the order of draw.
- Perform venipuncture protocols and specimen collection procedures.
- Practice capillary puncture techniques and understand arterial puncture procedures.
- Learn anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, along with medical terminology.
- Collect, process, and handle specimens correctly to support accurate lab testing.

Program Costs
The Enhanced Phlebotomy Technician program costs $2,400. This includes all programming, books, supplies, and certification exam fees. Many participants can reduce the out-of-pocket cost of this program by applying for county funding.

Funding Opportunities
Funding may be available through your local county workforce office. Our Enhanced Phlebotomy Technician program qualifies for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which provides up to $3,000 to job seekers participating in training for in-demand industries.
WIOA funding is administered through Finger Lakes Works. Residents of Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates Counties can find information about their Finger Lakes Works center online. Residents of other counties may contact their local county workforce office for further assistance.

Program Schedule and Learning Format
Complete 160 hours of training over 11 weeks through a mix of online and in-person instruction and an externship at a regional healthcare facility.
- Participate in instructor-led lessons and hands-on skills practice designed for working adults.
- Meet three nights a week (twice in-person and once online) for 11 weeks.
- Complete a 40-hour externship at Thompson or Geneva Hospitals.
- Prepare for and take the NHA CPT certification exam at the end of the course.
