A Growing Industry

The program will provide hands-on instruction in technical skills used in advanced manufacturing, including electrical systems, mechanical components and equipment maintenance.

Semiconductors, also known as microchips, are essential components in computers, smartphones, vehicles and other electronic devices. New York has become a center for semiconductor research and manufacturing, creating demand for workers with specialized technical skills.

According to the State University of New York, the semiconductor industry offers a wide range of career opportunities. SUNY estimates that 280,000 new jobs will be created in the industry over five years.

New York's growing role in the industry includes Micron Technology's planned $100 billion investment in semiconductor manufacturing in Central New York. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and increase demand for skilled workers throughout the region.

The FLCC boot camp will introduce participants to technical concepts and provide practical experience with tools and systems used in high-tech manufacturing. Sam Samanta, FLCC professor of physics and coordinator of the Smart Systems Technologies (SST) program, is the main instructor.

The Schedule

Participants must register for all 12 sessions, which will cover the following topics:

  • Nov. 6, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.: Introduction to the boot camp and problem-solving
  • Nov. 7, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.: Introduction to semiconductors
