FLCC professor to share Galápagos Islands experience
Monday, May 11, 2026
Professor John Bateman’s visit to the island chain that inspired Charles Darwin was, in part, a scouting trip for a potential travel course.
A professor will share photos and reflections about his experience visiting the Galápagos Islands on Monday, May 11, at 6 p.m. at the college’s main campus.
The wildlife on the island chain off the coast of Ecuador inspired Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution.
John Bateman, associate professor of environmental conservation and horticulture, will share “What the Islands Teach You: Reflections from the Galápagos,” in Stage 14, on the second floor of the Student Center, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. The event is free and open to the public.
Bateman will provide a visually engaging, story-driven presentation that blends natural history with a personal narrative of solo travel and immersion in a Spanish-speaking environment. “The Galápagos is one of those places many people have heard of, but few will ever experience,” he said.
The talk connects the science of one of the world’s most unique ecosystems with broader themes of curiosity, adaptation, and connecting with the natural world through firsthand experience.
Bateman’s trip in March was, in part, a scouting trip for a potential Unique Ecological Communities course offering. Previous courses have taken place in Costa Rica, the Florida Everglades, and South Africa.
“Stepping out of a familiar routine, especially with international travel, can foster independence, self-reflection, and a renewed sense of curiosity,” he said.
Bateman welcomes high school juniors and seniors and college students, especially those interested in study abroad and biology. Community members are also welcome since most FLCC travel courses are open to alumni and residents.
