Program Requirements

  • HSE courses are open to adults and out of school youth age 16 and older.
  • Complete a basic skills assessment in reading and math before or during your first HSE courses.
  • Achieve New York State Education Department (NYSED) level 2 cutoff scores in math and reading pretests.

GED Testing Information

The GED tests your knowledge of four subject areas:

  1. Language Arts — reading, writing, and critical thinking.
  2. Math — algebra, geometry, and statistics.
  3. Science — life science, physical science, and earth and space science.
  4. Social Studies — U.S. history, world history, economics, geography, and civics.

Note: NYS residents who passed their Regents exam in any of the areas above may be exempt from retesting in that subject.

When you're ready, register to take the GED at one of the locations listed below.

When you're ready to take the GED test, verify that you meet all of the following NYS requirements:

  • Be 19 years old to test in New York State (NYS). If you are 16, 17, or 18 you must get special approval to take the test.
  • Be a resident of NYS for at least 30 days prior to testing.
  • Are not currently be enrolled in a high school program leading to a high school diploma
  • Do not already have earned a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma

Review NYS GED Requirements

If you do not pass a subject area or miss your testing time, you must follow NYS retesting policies:

  • You must wait 60 days before rescheduling any failed subject/subtest.
  • You may only take a given subject/subtest three times per calendar year.
  • You are not allowed to retest for a higher score in a subject/subtest you have already passed.

You can reschedule or cancel your test appointment a minimum of 24 hours prior to the appointment time. If you do not reschedule or cancel your test at least 24 hours in advance, that test appointment will be counted as a missed test and you will be required to wait 60 days before scheduling another test.
