Safe Space or Brave Space?

The first event in the fall Civil Discourse Series is "Safe Space or Brave Space? Are Comfort and Critical Thinking Compatible?"

September 4, 2026 | 12:30–1:30 p.m. | 2755 Lecture Hall

This facilitated dialogue examines the concept of the "safe space" in higher education and asks whether efforts to create psychologically safe environments strengthen or unintentionally limit critical thinking. Students will explore the difference between feeling comfortable, feeling respected, and being intellectually challenged while developing strategies for engaging in difficult conversations.

Learning Objectives:

• Distinguish between safe spaces, brave spaces, and respectful learning environments.
• Examine how discomfort can contribute to intellectual growth.
• Identify behaviors that promote productive disagreement.
• Develop strategies for discussing controversial issues without personal attacks.
