Beyond Celebration: Building True Cultural Competence Luncheon

Tuesday, March 10, 2026

Go beyond celebrating different cultures and learn how to better understand, respect, and support people from different backgrounds.

This event encourages participants to look past surface-level ways of celebrating culture, like food, festivals, and holidays, and instead focus on deeper understanding.

In this interactive session, participants will learn the difference between cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and cultural competence, and why these ideas matter in school, work, and everyday life. The session will also help students recognize personal biases and microaggressions and understand how they can affect others.

Participants will leave with simple, practical ways to listen, learn from others, and create spaces where everyone feels respected and valued.

The event is hosted by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the college’s multicultural student organization, AALANA.
