Objects Will Speak If You Listen: A Reading With Author Sejal Shah
Tuesday, April 14, 2026
During the event, Shah will share the objects that inspired her work, demonstrating how writing about sentimental items can uncover stories about identity, memory and the past.
Author Sejal Shah will read selections from her books, This Is One Way to Dance: Essays, an NPR Best Book of 2020, and How to Make Your Mother Cry: Fictions, which was longlisted for the 2024-25 Story Prize.
Shah’s work has appeared in Brevity, Conjunctions, The Guardian, The Kenyon Review and Literary Hub, among others. In 2021, she was named an influential AAPI leader by Good Morning America and ABC News.
Her writing explores themes of race, place, invisible disability, neurodiversity and South Asian American identity. Shah lives in Rochester, New York.
