Atomic Diplomacy and a Total (Good?) War
Tuesday, October 21, 2025
The online talk is available through multiple outlets and marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Tom Zeiler, professor of history at the University of Colorado Boulder, will give an online talk about the closing days of World War II at FLCC on Oct. 21.
His talk on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. will be available on the Webex videoconferencing platform, the Finger Lakes TV network, and YouTube.
Zeiler will focus on the final battles, diplomacy, and tragedies of the Pacific War, asking whether the atomic bomb was necessary. He questions the popular notion that the second World War was a “good war,” as opposed to the more ambiguous conflicts that followed.
Zeiler is the author of “Unconditional Defeat: Japan, America, and the End of World War II” and “Annihilation: A Global Military History of World War II.”
His newest book, “Beyond the Nixon Shocks,” explores the demise of the American century. It will be available in December.
Zeiler’s talk is part of the History, Culture and Diversity Series, organized by Robert Brown, FLCC professor of history.
