English Placement Tests

FLCC's English placement tests measure your reading comprehension and sentence skills. They assess your ability to understand what you read and measure your understanding of what makes a sentence complete and clear.

The Tests

Reading

The reading test, comprised of 20 questions, measures your ability to understand what you read and allows you to identify main ideas and make inferences. In this test, questions will focus on:

  • Information and Ideas (reading closely, determining central ideas and themes, summarizing, understanding relationships)
  • Rhetoric (analyzing word choice rhetorically, analyzing text structure, analyzing point of view, analyzing purpose, analyzing arguments)
  • Synthesis (analyzing multiple texts)
  • Vocabulary

Writing

The Writing test, comprised of 25 questions, measures your understanding of sentence structure specific to what makes a sentence complete and clear. In this test, questions will focus on:

  • Expression of Ideas (development, organization, effective language use)
  • Standard English Conventions (sentence structure, usage, and punctuation)

Preparing for the Tests

Study for your placement test using the free ACCUPLACER Practice App. This app includes practice questions and explanations for correct and incorrect answers. To access the app, visit accuplacerpractice.collegeboard.org, create your account, and select "Next-Generation Practice Tests." Click on the test you want to practice and select "Learn as you Go." to receive immediate feedback on each question, or select "Sample Test" for a sample test. For the English placement test, you should practice the Reading and Writing tests. For your convenience, you can save and return to a practice test at any time
