DESCRIPTION:Vietnam War Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Sammy Davis will give an online talk on Tuesday, Nov. 18, as part of the History, Culture and Diversity Series at the College. The talk begins at 7 p.m. on the Webex video conferencing platform and other outlets below. Sgt. First Class Sammy Davis was a private first class when he distinguished himself on Nov. 18, 1967, during a Vietnam War battle. He was serving as a cannoneer with Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 4th Artillery of the 9th Infantry Division. At 2 a.m., Davis’ fire support base came under intense mortar and ground attack by a reinforced Viet Cong battalion that advanced to within 25 meters. After his gun crew was disabled by enemy fire, Davis single-handedly loaded and fired a burning howitzer multiple times despite his injuries. Unable to swim, he then crossed a deep river on an air mattress to rescue three wounded comrades, providing covering fire before rejoining the fight until the enemy retreated. Davis’ talk is made possible by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The History, Culture and Diversity Series is organized by Robert Brown, FLCC professor of history. Other viewing options include the Finger Lakes TV network.: Roku Spectrum cable channel 1304 in the western Finger Lakes 24/7 web stream at fingerlakestv.org/live The Cablecast app available at the Apple store or Google Play It will also be available on the FLCC YouTube channel.
