The
Developmental Studies Department coordinates courses in math, reading,
study skills, writing, and American Sign Language. Courses for students interested in teaching assistant certification are also coordinated through the department. Each course is designed
to assess the incoming students ability level and to improve
that ability before the semester ends. Class size for these courses
is small to allow for maximum interaction between student and instructor.
Each course carries three credit hours, and most courses will apply
as general elective credit for any degree program.
Offering
support at the FLCC Wayne County and Geneva Centers as well as the Canandaigua
campus, the Academic Support Centers provide various services to
help students make the most of their educational experience. If
help is needed with a difficult assignment, studying for an exam
or writing a research paper, the professional staff at the Academic
Support Centers can assist. The Academic Support Center on the Canandaigua
campus has a computer classroom for those with little or no computer
experience, as well as technology for sight impaired and hearing
impaired students.
A
Peer Tutor program provides assistance on a one-to-one or group
basis for any course offered at FLCC. A Peer Tutor course is offered
through the Department and is designed so that students become involved
with service learning while strengthening their background in education
theory and practice.
Learning
disabilities (LD) is a term to describe a variety of difficulties
in acquiring, storing and/or retrieving information. These difficulties
can often lead to problems with reading, writing or mathematics.
Because everyones needs are different, learning disability
services are offered on a highly individualized basis. A learning
disabilities coordinator arranges services which may include extended
time and alternate location for tests, peer tutors, note takers
and texts on tape. Students may contact the LD coordinator in the
Developmental Studies Department to arrange for services. Students
must also provide recent documentation in order to receive support
services.
The
Developmental Studies Department supports two ways to obtain a high
school equivalency diploma. Through one option, 24 college credits
can be accumulated in one of FLCCs degree programs (costs
are the same as regular tuition). Another option is to successfully
complete a High School Equivalency class (no cost for the course)
and then pass the State High School Equivalency examination. Contact
the Developmental Studies Department or the Adult Basic Education
Coordinator for more information.
