For
ESL Classes:
Q:
When and where do classes meet?
A:
Classes meet at various times and places in Canandaigua,
Geneva, and Newark. Contact the program office to get a class
schedule of the specific times and locations of classes.

Q:
Is there an enrollment fee for any of the classes?
A:
No. All of the classes are currently free and workbooks are provided.

Q:
How do I register for a Class?
A:
Students may enroll in a class at any time during the semester and will complete registration forms at the first class they attend.

Q:
Who can attend the GED classes?
A:
Classes are open to individuals without a high school diploma
ages 17 and older who are not currently enrolled in high school. Individuals
with a diploma may attend classes if they want to improve their basic
skills in a specific area.

Q:
Do I need to attend classes in order to take the GED exam?
A:
No, BUT it is strongly recommended that you
attend in order to assess your test readiness and become familiar with
the GED test format and the scoring system. Students who attend preparation classes have a higher pass rate on the GED exam than those who do not attend classes.

Q:
Can I study for the test at home?
A:
Yes. You can enroll in GED Connection (GED on TV). You watch the
lessons at home, complete the workbook assignments and discuss your
progress with a tutor during a weekly phone call at a pre-arranged time.

Q:
Who is eligible to take the GED Exam?
A:
Anyone over age 19 and students who are 17 or 18 if they
have been out of school one year or if their class has graduated.

Q:
Is there a charge to take the GED exam?
A:
No. the exam is free.

Q:
How do I sign up for the GED exam?
A:
The GED instructors have test applications and they are also available
at the office of the GED coordinator at FLCC Main Campus. Test
applications should be filed at least one month prior to a scheduled
test in order to guarantee a seat at that test.

Q:
How long is the exam and what subjects does it cover?
A:
The test is approximately 7.5 hours long and is given over
two days. It is a multiple-choice test covering writing (including an
essay), social studies, science, literature, reading, and math.

Q:
When and where is the test given?
A:
Copies of the test centers and test dates are available from
the program office on Main Campus.

ESL Classes:
Q:
Who can attend the ESL classes?
A:
Anyone age 16 and older who is a speaker of a language other than English and wants to improve their ability to read, write and speak
English.

Q:
How much English must I know in order to enroll in the class?
A:
Students at all levels are welcome to attend the classes.
Beginning level students through advanced level students may attend classes.

Q:
Is there a home study program for ESL?
A:
Yes. Crossroads Café is a series of lessons shown
on TV which helps people learn to speak, read and write English. Students
watch the lessons, complete the assignments in workbooks and practice
speaking English with a tutor during a weekly phone call. Students may
also attend an ESL class for extra practice.

Q:
What are classes like?
A:
Classes are small, informal and friendly. They also provide
an opportunity to learn about American culture and customs.

How do I get more information about ESL classes, GED classes and
the GED exam?
A:
Call the Adult Literacy Education Program office at FLCC
(585) 394-3500, extension 7431. Office hours are Monday through Friday,
8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Messages maybe left on voice mail 24 hours a
day.
