Employee Desktop PC policy

Finger Lakes Community College provides a Desktop PC for most employees for the sole purpose of supporting the business and educational functions of the college. Hardware and software support and maintenance of Employee Desktop PC systems and college standard peripherals is provided by Institutional Computing Services for college standard computing equipment requisitioned through Institutional Computing Services. A necessary Employee LAN account is provided for employees to access network resources subject to the provisions and restrictions of the FLCC Network Usage Policy.

FLCC Employee Desktop PC users are expected to use their PC’s in an ethical and responsible manner. The following list of restrictions of usage applies to all FLCC Employee Desktop PC users. Institutional Computing Services reserves the right to modify, delete, and add restrictions to this list when necessary:

  • No loading of any unapproved software. (unapproved software is that software that has not been specifically approved by Institutional Computing Services)
  • No loading of any screen saver software or desktop background software - the only approved screen savers and backgrounds are built-in to the operating system.
  • In those cases where the user loads their own software to support a business function, the user is responsible to maintain that software. (e.g. PDA software)
  • In the event that a user loads third party software, the user is responsible to make sure that the software is compatible with the ongoing sets of patches and updates that Institutional Computing Services continually deploys.
  • Institutional Computing Services will not guarantee or troubleshoot non-college-standard software or peripherals.
  • No loading or use of peer-to-peer (P2P) file, music, or video sharing software such as KaZaA, BearShare, FurthurNet, etc..
  • Users are responsible to use FLCC Employee Desktop PC’s in a manner which is consistent with all local, state and federal laws - which includes each individual user being solely responsible for any and all copyright infringement that occurs as a result of their use of FLCC computer systems.
  • Employees are prohibited from moving Employee Desktop PC’s to different physical or network locations without the approval of Institutional Computing Services.
  • Users are prohibited from connecting unapproved peripheral devices to their FLCC Desktop PC via wireless, infrared (IR), USB, or other means. PDA devices may be connected subject to the provisions and restrictions of the Use of Personal Digital Assistant Devices guidelines document.
  • Employee FLCC Desktop PC systems are not personal and private. FLCC Institutional Computing Services and other administrative staff may routinely access employee user data for legitimate business purposes, to diagnose and resolve technical problems, and to investigate possible misuse of FLCC computer systems and resources.

For details on all aspects of FLCC computer use, you can pick up a pamphlet guide entitled “Institutional Computing Services for Faculty and Staff” at the computer help desk (B388).
