Earning a GED
Once a student passes the Ability to Benefit test and is admitted to FLCC, he/she must pursue a High School equivalency diploma (GED) in one of two ways:
- by taking specific college courses (24-credit option) or
- by taking the GED exam offered by the NYS Education Department.
(Students cannot graduate from FLCC with an associates degree without first obtaining the GED).
The 24 credit hour option
Students are eligible to receive a GED after successfully completing 24 approved college credits. The specific 24 credits are designated by New York State and are in addition to any credits required by FLCC as an outcome of testing. To insure that students enroll in the appropriate courses, an advisor is assigned to assist with course selection. Upon completion of the credits, students will apply for the GED through the State Education Department. See the course distribution requirements for more information.
GED Exam
A student's skills can be evaluated to determine readiness to take the State GED exam. If it is recommended, the student can then sit for the GED exam and earn a diploma through testing.
