ADVISING MATHEMATICS

FLCC offers a two-year program leading to the Associate in Science Liberal Arts and Sciences degree. Through appropriate course selection, students may prepare to transfer to upper-division study in Mathematics.

MATH PLACEMENT GUIDELINES

TEST SCORE PLACEMENT
0 – 7 GST 142 (Fundamentals of Mathematics & Algebraic Skills)
8 – 14

MAT 145 (College Algebra) or

MAT 121 (Statistics I)

Depending on degree requirements.

15 – 19 MAT 152 (Pre-Calculus)
20 –25 MAT 271 (Calculus I)

The above scores provide a guideline only for math placement and should not be construed as the only factor in determining appropriate placement. Additional factors to consider are the student’s high school transcript, the requirements of the student’s degree program, the student’s direct input and the other math placement materials found on the preceding pages of this handbook.

COURSES WHICH DO NOT HAVE PREREQUISITES

  1. GST 142 Fundamental Mathematical and Algebraic Skills
  2. Does not fulfill mathematics requirement.
  3. Introduction to or review of algebraic concepts.
  4. Elective credit only.

MAT 101 College Mathematics

  1. Is not a developmental or remedial course.
  2. Has no prerequisite nor is it a precursor.
  3. A topics course for liberal arts students.
  4. Math awareness course.

MAT 110 Business Mathematics

  1. May not be transferable especially for liberal arts students.
  2. Mathematics of money.
  3. Stresses use of formulas and scientific calculator.

COURSES REQUIRING SOME ALGEBRA BACKGROUND

MAT 121 Statistics I

MAT 122 Statistics II

  1. Needs the ability to understand and transform formulas.
  2. For full usefulness and to insure transferability, need both courses.

MAT 145 College Algebra

MAT 151 Trigonometry

MAT 152 Pre-Calculus

MAT 271 Calculus I

  1. Scientific and technological sequence.
  2. Probably has taken a placement test.
  3. See mathematics department advisor.

COMPUTING COURSE ADVISEMENT

CSC 100 Computer Awareness

  1. Computer literacy
  2. Not an elective in CSC, CIS, CTN programs

CSC 115 Intro. To Programming and Computing

  1. First course for CSC and CIS majors

CSC 134, Core Word; CSC 135, Core Excel; CSC 136, PowerPoint (1 credit each)

  1. Need CSC 100 or CSC 115 or experience

CSC 120 Tools for Internet Users

  1. Internet research and search techniques.
  2. Not an elective in CSC, CIS, CTN
  3. For the student who doesn’t want an application course (100)
