Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.)

The Outlook

The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that employment opportunities in hotel and resort management are most promising for those who have earned college degrees in the field. Increasing business travel will drive the growth of employment for lodging managers, and , large, full-service hotels will continue to offer many trainee and managerial opportunities. Through the A.A.S. Hotel and Resort Management degree program at Finger Lakes Community College, you can prepare for a successful career in this exciting industry, locally or anywhere in the nation.

The Program

The Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Hotel and Resort Management at FLCC is designed to provide you with a broad-based knowledge of the hotel and resort industry by analyzing hotel management theories and industry trends. Throughout the program. students spend considerable time in hotels for a firsthand look at this dynamic field.

Technology: Our program utilizes the most advanced industry computer software, including the Logistix property management system. You will also work with desktop publishing packages to produce menus and industry-related flyers and make use of the Internet to correspond with other hotel students and with companies throughout the world.

Honors Courses: The College offers honors courses that provide enhanced educational experiences for students who have demonstrated outstanding academic ability. Enrollment in honors courses is open to qualified students in this degree program, as well as all other qualified FLCC students. Successful completion of honors courses or an Honors Certificate may increase student transfer options to four-year institutions.

The Experience

The Hotel and Resort Management internship program is tailored to your desired career path. You may intern at a local Marriott, Microtel, Sheraton, Radisson, or Hyatt hotel; at a Hard Rock Cafe anywhere in the country; or in Walt Disney World, among others.

Field trips: Trips to the finest small bed-and-breakfasts in picturesque settings and the most elaborate five-star hotels and restaurants in major markets broaden your experience and provide an insider perspective. In the past, classes have visited the Plaza, Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Waldorf Astoria, and Royal York in New York City, Toronto, Las Vegas, and Boston.

On campus, Hotel and Resort Management students participate in related activities such as catering College events, hosting guest lecturers, and much more.

The Graduates

Our graduates have gone directly to entry-level and management positions in the hotel and resort field. Others continue their college experience at four-year institutions such as Niagara University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Cornell University, Johnson and Wales, and the Culinary Institute of America,* holding positions such as catering manager, executive housekeeper, director of operations, assistant meeting planner, bell captain, conference service manager, front desk manager, guest relations agent, reservation agent, sales manager, and food and beverage manager.

Careers: According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, median annual earnings of lodging managers were $30,770 in 2000. Salary levels vary greatly depending on responsibilities and the segment of the hotel industry in which managers are employed.

The Faculty

The Business Administration faculty bring a diverse background of practical experiences to the hotel and resort management classroom environment. As a result, faculty are able to enrich the learning experience and assist the students with achieving a level of competency appropriate for success in the workplace and for transfer to four-year colleges. The faculty are dedicated, caring, professionals who are known for their commitment to students and their education. Additionally, the department have faculty who have received the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Curriculum Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 69 semester hours with a grade point average of not less than C (2.0).

All associate degree programs require English 101 Freshman English and English 102 Introduction to Literature. Students must pass skills assessment for entrance into these courses. Students who are well prepared may substitute ENG 104 English I Honors and ENG 105 English II Honors for ENG101 and ENG102. Students who are considering the English Honors sequence should consult the Director of Honors.

Sample Schedule

The schedule shows how the requirements for the A.A.S. Hotel & Resort Management degree may be met in four semesters. This schedule is an example of one of many possible different schedules. It is included only as an illustration of the type of schedule that might be followed by a full-time student. Many students attending Finger Lakes Community College who have work and/or family obligations choose a different sequence of courses and take more than four semesters to fulfill the requirements for the A.A.S. Hotel & Resort Management degree. Similarly, students who find they need to take some additional course work to prepare them to do well in the types of courses included in the A.A.S. Hotel & Resort Management degree program may plan a schedule that takes more than four semesters to complete the degree. All students should consult their advisor when they plan their schedule.
