| The
Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences
at Finger Lakes Community College is designed to provide students
with sufficient background to transfer and successfully compete in
a four-year institution. This program is well-suited for students
who have a strong interest in science and mathematics and provides
courses equivalent to those offered during the freshman and sophomore
years at most four-year colleges and universities.
The
degree is recognized in transfer
(articulation) agreements with a large number of public and private
four-year institutions in New York State and across the nation.
Our
Honors courses, open to all qualified students, provide enhanced
educational experiences for students with outstanding ability. Successful
completion of Honors courses or an Honors Certificate may increase
your transfer options to four-year institutions.
The
Advisement Areas:
Through
the A.S. Liberal Arts & Sciences degree, students can focus
their studies on, but are not limited to:
=>
Biology
=> Chemistry
=> Physics
=> Human Nutrition
and Food
=> Mathematics
=>

Mathematics
Mathematics provides you with the preparation necessary to transfer
to programs in which strong mathematics foundations are a must.
A dedicated classroom for the teaching of mathematics is complemented
by computers and instruction that includes the use of graphing
calculators, bringing modern mathematics trends to Finger Lakes
students.
The
Graduates
Students in this area of study transfer to four-year colleges
and universities such as SUNY College at Geneseo, St. John Fisher
College, and Rochester Institute of Technology*, and pursue careers
in mathematics and mathematics-related fields.
The
Scholarships
Students meeting specific criteria have been awarded the New York
Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges' Dan Dodway Award
for Excellence and Promise in the Field of Mathematics Education,
and faculty have been awarded the Dwight D. Eisenhower Title II
Grant and the National Science Foundation Grant.

Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, and Human Nutrition and Food
In the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Human Nutrition and Food
areas, the program is designed to provide students with a strong
science foundation. Laboratory experiences enhance course work.
Creative
thinking and problem solving are coupled with appropriate models,
preserved specimen, and technical equipment in each area of study.
Our biology laboratory is equipped with presentation equipment and
computers for student use.
An
additional science classroom has Pentium computers for student use
in group learning, and new equipment for DNA analysis, electrophoresis,
and electrocardiograms provides our students with specialized skills.
If
you are a recent high school graduate or are returning to school
to pursue a career in science or technology, the Science Studies
certificate may be an option for entering a two-year degree program.
Faculty
for the program have received grants and awards, including the National
Science Foundation Grant and the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence
in Teaching.
The
Graduates
Graduates successfully transfer to such four-year institutions
as the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology,
Cornell University, SUNY Colleges at Brockport, Environmental
Science and Forestry at Syracuse, Buffalo, and Geneseo, in addition
to Keuka and St. John Fisher Colleges.*
The
range of careers pursued after completion of the baccalaureate
program is almost limitless: medicine (including physical and
occupational therapy, physician, physician assistant, medical
laboratory technician, radiologist), teacher, professor, researcher,
statistician, mechanical engineer, agronomist, nutritionist, aquatic
biologist, and geologist are some examples.
The
Scholarships
The ExxonMobil Corporation provides scholarship money
for students in engineering, physics, or chemistry, and the Murray
Gardner Award in Engineering supplies additional scholarship
money for qualifying students.
